Do tow companies have to be licensed?

Yes! In Ontario all tow companies AND tow operators must be both provincially and municipally licensed. These requirements help you the consumer make sure that the towing provider assisting you is trained and insured to be providing the service. Over the last 4 years with the provincial government instituting the TSSEA (Towing and Storage Safety and Enforcement Act) the industry has gotten much safer for the consumer and gotten rid of many of the bad apples. However you may still find someone providing cheap or suspicious towing services without the necessary licensing and insurance. Think twice before using those shady tow companies as saving a few bucks is not worth loosing your vehicle or having a significant repair bill for the damages they cause.
